Louisiana Sheriff Duties and Responsibilities

The sheriff is elected at-large and serves a four-year term. The Sheriff’s law enforcement duties include keeping peace within the parish. Administrative duties include serving as the parish’s jailor, collection and distribution of court fines, submitting a budget of his office to the Police Jury, keeping Louisiana Department Reports, and keeping a jail docket.

The Sheriff also serves as the Ex-Officio Tax Collector for the Parish which includes the collection and distribution of the ad valorem taxes, state revenue sharing and federal revenue.
